Dutch I for Asian Students

In this course you will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar of Dutch, and you will be trained in the skills reading, listening, speaking, and writing at a basic level aimed at practical situations. Unlike the course Dutch I for International Students, this course pays additional attention to comprehension (what exactly is being said) and pronunciation, making it especially suitable for speakers of (South) East Asian languages.

The online material helps you prepare for and review the lessons. You will also receive a weekly writing assignment, which you will have to rewrite based on feedback from your lecturer. Furthermore, you'll obtain a lot of information about Dutch culture, for example; about family relationships and food and drink. Part 1 of the method Start.nl is largely (but not entirely) covered.

At the end of the course, you will have reached level A0+. You will then be able to do the following in Dutch:

  • exchange personal information (age, nationality, address, study);
  • exchange information about your hobbies, likes and dislikes;
  • exchange information about family;
  • exchange information about your living conditions (rent, place of living, etc.);
  • make an appointment (initiate, confirm or reject);
  • order something in a café or restaurant, including asking about price and express preferences;
  • exchange information about travelling (hotel booking, buy tickets, etc.);
  • communicate about daily routine;
  • talk about grocery shopping (prices, numbers);
  • understand the differences and similarities between your own culture and those of Dutch-speaking countries and make them clear to others to facilitate communication.

Target group

(South) East Asian students from e.g., China, Japan or South Korea who want to learn Dutch. If you have already taken a Dutch course but you have doubts about your level, take this placement test (links to the (external) website of a fellow institute) or read more about the differences between Dutch I and II. You can also contact the Student Desk.

Students with different language backgrounds are referred to the course Dutch I for International Students. This course has a slightly higher pace.
