Advanced English (C1 level)

This course aims to support you in improving your overall proficiency in English to a C1 level, in relation to your speaking, writing, reading and listening skills as well as grammar and vocabulary.

C1 is the level of proficiency needed to function well in an English-taught study program or in an English-speaking environment. To that end, you will learn to comprehend longer written and spoken texts from a range of genres. You will also learn to produce spontaneous and prepared speech and organized texts on less familiar topics with sufficient consideration for detail and style.

Target audience

This course is recommended if your current level of English a B2 level and you wish to work on an overall C1 level proficiency. This course is a particularly good fit if you desire to work in an English-language environment upon graduation.

At the end of the course, you will able to

  1. interpret and connect ideas in more complex texts on topics within and outside your field of interest;
  2. comprehend extended speech at a C1 level with one or more speakers in a range of social, professional and academic settings;
  3. express yourself fluently, clearly and appropriately in a range of social and academic or professional situations with the ability to formulate ideas and opinions on both familiar and unfamiliar topics;
  4. compose structured written texts in which clear, detailed descriptions of subjects are presented and register and style have been selected appropriately;
  5. use a range of vocabulary, including less common words and phrases, and a variety of grammatical forms flexibly, appropriately and accurately in written and spoken discourse to the degree that can be expected of a writer and speaker of English at C1 level;
  6. make spoken or written information accessible to a different audience and/or in a different medium or register.

Specifics

  • This course is taught fully on campus.
  • Since active participation is a key part of language skills courses, you need to able to interact with the group. Before signing up for the online group, make sure you have a stable internet connection, a working webcam and headset or microphone. See the recommended hardware requirements.
  • 80% attendance is required. Lessons are not recorded for later viewing.
  • The language of instruction in the course is English.
  • Language learning takes time! In this course, you are expected to spend up to 8 hours a week on independent study.
  • The Language Center reserves the right to cancel the course should enrollment numbers prove to be insufficient.
