Language: English – Subtitles: English
Time: 20:30-22:50 hrs. Free entrance (no registration required).

“I am finding being alive fascinating.”

In Victorian London, an unconventional scientist brings back a woman to life through a transplant of her unborn child’s brain. Under his protection, Bella is eager to learn. With her intelligence developing, she seeks experience, freedom, and adventures. Free from the societal norms of her times, she is determined to fight for equality.

Based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, the film was most inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It is considered Lanthimos’ best film to date, despite his earlier successes with The Favourite, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Lobster. Poor Things is a visual, design-rich visual experience that leaves no one indifferent.

Reception

After premiering at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, the film quickly gained widespread acclaim. Named one of the top ten films of 2023 by the American Film Institute, the film went on to receive dozens of accolades. At the 96th Academy Awards, it received 4 wins out of 11 nominations, most notably the Best Actress award for Emma Stone (her career second).

“A delicious, unpredictable mix of horror, science-fiction, romance, comedy and sex that is set in a world of exhilarating, Wes Anderson-style visual delights.”
-Houston Chronicle

“Absolutely batshit, utterly filthy and a true original: Poor Things is as good as Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have ever been.”
-Empire Magazine
