“I don't think I've ever had a real family Christmas like this before.”

A grumpy educator at a New England prep school stays on campus over Christmas break to look after a few students who have no place to go. He unexpectedly develops a close relationship with a brilliant but troubled student and the school's head cook, a woman mourning the loss of her son in the Vietnam War.

Set in the 1970s, the director made the film with the feel of 70s films in mind. Despite being shot digitally, the film resembles those of the era, such as The Breakfast Club and Dead Poets Society.

Reception

The film received universal acclaim, specifically for its performances and Payne’s direction, with this being his first directed feature in 6 years. At the Academy Awards, the film received 5 nominations, out of which one resulted in a win. For her performance, Da'Vine Joy Randolph received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, the first of her career.

“When it’s over, the chill it leaves in your spine is destined to last nearly as long as the smile on your face.”
-Observer

“The Holdovers presents a compelling time capsule of an era that may be long ago but still feels raw and relatable today.”
-Consequence
