DSFS loting 2024

€207,000 for 13 Digital Sciences for Society Growth Projects

Published: 24th June 2024 Last updated: 26th June 2024

A new series of Growth Projects will be launched with funding from the Digital Sciences for Society program. In this way, Tilburg University is giving further impetus to research that contributes to digital innovation with an eye for social and societal aspects. Last year, the university already awarded a total of € 240,000 for a first series of Growth Projects.

The strength of the Growth Projects lies in the multidisciplinary collaboration at the intersection of digital sciences, social sciences, and humanities and involvement of at least one external partner. The term "Growth Projects" indicates that these are relatively small-scale projects to inspire larger-scale follow-up research.

With the new series of Growth Projects, a huge diversity of socially relevant topics is once again being taken up. I hope, and expect, that the research projects will result in relevant scientific insights and socially relevant output

Boudewijn Haverkort, Academic lead of the Digital Sciences for Society program

Grant allocation by lottery

Like last year, the available funding for Growth Projects was distributed by lottery. This was done after first determining which of the submitted applications were of sufficient quality and met the formal requirements. Each project could apply for an amount between € 10,000 and 25,000.

Investment of € 7 million over several years

Through the Digital Sciences for Society program, the university is investing in excess of € 7 million in research, education, and collaboration initiatives that help scientists, students, and society make the best and most responsible use of digital technology.

Since 2023, € 447,000 has been awarded to 27 Growth Projects and € 2,400,000 to four Icon Projects, which have a longer duration than Growth Projects. They also involve a larger number of researchers and partners.

An overview of all current projects can be found on the Digital Sciences for Society website.
