Prof. Elies van Sliedregt appointed to Advisory Committee on Public International Law
31st January 2023The Dutch government has appointed Tilburg University professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Elies van Sliedregt as a member of the Advisory Committee on Public International Law (CAVV) effective February 1, 2023. The CAVV is an independent body which advises the government, the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Netherlands on international law issues.

In this Collaborative Center Tilburg University enters into a long-term partnership with societal partners to address the climate crisis. At least 200.000 refugees enslaved and trafficked in Libya between 2017-2021
24th January 2023Eritrean refugees are trafficked and enslaved in Libya, where they are tortured, abused and raped by slavetraders to force family members to pay ransoms for their release. If they escape and make it to the Mediterranean Sea, they risk being intercepted and sent back to Libya or dying at sea. These are conclusions from the research led by Professor Mirjam van Reisen in the book published this week, titled "ENSLAVED. Trapped and Trafficked in Digital Black Holes: Human Trafficking Trajectories to Libya”.

The Consoling Power of Music: The Role of Emotions and Musical Aspects
17th January 2023Music and emotions are inextricably linked to one another. Music's ability to evoke emotion in listeners, is one of the reasons why people turn to music to improve their mood or express what they are feeling. Even though music is able to console, little systematic research has considered how music can offer consolation. This dissertation investigates music's consoling properties and considers related behavior, such as crying over music.

Migrant workers dare not make a case when labor law problems arise
22nd December 2022Labor migrants especially in the lowest income groups have more frequent labor disputes than the Dutch working population, but do not dare to file formal cases about them for fear of being fired. Those are the main conclusions in the recently published report, which Tilburg University researchers Anna Sobczyk-Turek and Jan Cremers collaborated on for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

Dr. Sander Bax appointed Professor of Education and Culture
15th December 2022The Executive Board of Tilburg University has appointed Dr. Sander Bax as Professor of Education and Culture effective January 1, 2023. Bax will work on the influence of digital and global media culture on the development of culture and literature, on education in culture and literature and on educational design in general. In addition to his professorship, Bax will also serve as department chair of the Tilburg Center of the Learning Sciences at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences.

08th December 2022Through analysis of Arab The Voice, which is shown throughout the Arab world, Mona Farrag Attwa examined how Arabs from diverse communities, with their own dialect, history, politics and culture, communicate with each other. The dialects are very different, but written Arabic is the same everywhere. Mona Farrag Attwa will receive her doctorate on December 12.

"Have political government communication tested by judge"
06th December 2022The Dutch government campaign for a European Constitution in 2005 was unconstitutional, at least according to a new legal review framework that Tjebbe Geldof developed in his doctoral research on political government communication. Because parliament has repeatedly failed to effectively control government communication, citizens should be able to raise their objections to it with an independent judge, he argues.

Visual online posts with brand reference only effective if creator is known to recipient
01st December 2022In recent years, the popularity of visual social media has grown rapidly. These platforms allow users to share their lives with a large online audience by posting photos. These photos regularly include a brand, such as when the person in the photo is wearing branded clothing or posing with a branded product, such as a beer on the terrace. Annemarie Nanne argues that brand recommendation is only effective if the recipient knows the sender. She will receive her doctorate on December 2.

Fred Atilla wins Unilever Research Prize for research on growing negative emotions by corona on Twitter
28th November 2022Cognitive psychologist Fred Atilla has won the Unilever Research Prize 2022 for his research on how attention to and emotions about the approaching corona epidemic changed among Twitter users during the first few months of the pandemic. Physical distance from a corona hotspot was found to influence both public attention and sentiment among Twitter users. Atilla teaches machine learning in the humanities faculty. The prize of 2,500 euros with a work of art was presented November 24 in Wageningen.

Natascha Kienstra appointed endowed Professor of Ethics Education
27th October 2022The Executive Board of Tilburg University has appointed Dr. Natascha Kienstra as endowed Professor of Ethical Formation at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology (TST) effective November 1. Kienstra thereby accepts to hold the Women of Bethany Chair. This aims to contribute to religious education and moral formation in schools. The appointment is for a period of five years.
