Jörg Raab and Tine Buyl appointed as professors in the Department of Organization Studies
31st March 2023The Executive Board of Tilburg University has appointed two new professors in the Department of Organization Studies at the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Jörg Raab will hold the chair of Inter-Organizational Networks and Tine Buyl will become Professor of Strategy, Strategic Leadership and Organizational Resilience. Raab will also become the new chair of the department.

Retailer price promotions increase waste awareness, not waste
30th March 2023Contrary to what is often assumed, retailer price promotions such as “Buy One, Get One” or quantity discounts in supermarkets do not cause more food to go to waste. In fact, such offers appear to increase consumer awareness of the risk of wasting food, which in turn spurs them on to prevent waste. Supermarkets could encourage such awareness-driven behavior by designing smart campaigns that help prevent waste.

Tilburg University involves people with intellectual disabilities in doing research
30th March 2023Tilburg University's Academic Collaborative Center on Living with Intellectual Disabilities (in Dutch: AWVB) has developed a training course that introduces people with intellectual disabilities to conducting scientific research. Academic lead, professor Petri Embregts: "The training is an ultimate good practice to professionalize client participation and give clients the opportunity to participate in thinking and advising on care research that is - also - about them."

Traditional sorghum beer key to conflict settlement in rural Uganda
13th March 2023In rural Uganda, both clan councils and government institutions play an important role in settling local disputes. This leads to tensions around the issue of sovereignty: who ultimately decides on things? These tensions often revolve around the use of locally brewed beer in clan councils. But the two kinds of authorities also need each other to maintain their sovereignty in the district. That’s what Danse de Bondt concludes in her dissertation which she will defend at Tilburg University on Friday 17 March 2023.

NWO Vici grant for research Prof. Jelte Wicherts on causal effects in psychological experiments
22nd February 2023The NWO has awarded Professor of Methodology Jelte Wicherts a Vici grant of one and a half million euros for his research on differences in causal effects in psychological experiments. The five-year project will allow Wicherts to appoint three PhD students and a postdoc.

When our mind strays from a present activity, our movements become slower and more erratic
06th February 2023When our minds wander during performance of a task, our fine motor movements become slower, less direct and more complex. The deeper our minds wander, the more erratic our fine movements become, indicating greater detachment from the present environment. Our brains process stimuli from the external environment more weakly and brain activity becomes more similar to brain waves that are present during sleep. These are the results of research done by Mariana Dias da Silva-van Riel who will receive her doctorate on February 8.
